APRS Ui-View 32 on Internet Connection

This is an attempt to encourage more people to use the internet side of the growing APRS

network in the Chemung, Schuyler, and Tompkins County area. Please feel free to contact me with

 any corrections or questions concerning this page. Charlie Santi KA2BED 607-739-9817 or on

 the N3AQ (147.360+) repeater.

- Go to www.ui-view.org

Click on downloads, UI-View 32 V2.03 Downloads, go down 2nd paragraph click on

32full203.exe. Download this program and follow installation and registration instructions. You

must register the program for it to work. Registration is only available to licensed hams and is

free. It usually takes 24-36 hrs. to get your registration numbers. You will get a 15 digit number to

open the program and a 5 digit number you will need later on during setup.

- Go to www.pa7rhm.nl

This is the free map server program that is used most often on APRS. There are mapping

programs out there that are more advanced, like Precision Mapping, however you have to pay a

fee to use them. Scroll down the page to: PA7RHMsvr map server Version 1.1.10. Download and

install this program.  Once you have your registration number open Ui-View32. You should see a

British map. Leave that map there for now.

1) On top menu open file and go to Download APRS Server List. When box opens change URL

to: france.aprs2.net/aprserve2.txt. After that downloads close that box.

2) On top menu again open map tab. Click on Refresh Map List. Then click on Load a Map. On

the top of that list should be PA7RHMsvr, Uiview32 MapServer. Highlight that line and click on

Load a Map. A map of the US should open on your screen. Go to

www.pa7rhm.nl/downloads/PA7RHMsvr.html. This will bring up the instructions as to how to

navigate the map server. Using the map server commands, zoom the map into your location with

you being in the center of about a 150 mile radius. You can change this range after APRS is

running to suit your needs.

3) Top menu again Options:

* Show map outlines.

* Show symbols on map.

* Highlight IGATEs.

* Auto refresh.

* Show monitor window.

* Exclusions enabled.

* Sound enabled.

Announce stations >

                                   * First time only.

These can be changed to suit your own needs after setup is complete.

4) Top menu Setup.

Each time you open an item in setup it will open a help file for you to read. After you close that file

you can then open the tab to enter information.

Station Setup:

Enter your call sign.

Enter your Latitude and Longitude. If you do not know it have some one with a GPS come in your

driveway and get it for you. Locator will fill in itself.

Unproto port 1.

Unproto address APRS.

Beacon Comment (most people put in their email address).

Ui-View Tag x

Default ok for beacon interval.

Symbol, bring down list and find 'Home' (you can change this later if you want).

GPS symbol leave as default.

Compressed beacon should be blank.

5) Now go down to APRS Server Setup.

On that list find missouri.aprs2.net:14. Put a check in that box. (That server seems to be the most

stable for our area) All other boxes are left as defaults except. Validation Number: That is the 5

digit number you received with your registration.

6) Open Exclude/Include Lists.

In bottom right of that box put 150 in the miles away space and to the left of that check

Enable Exclusions. (This step is not necessary but it helps in the beginning, you can change it later

to whatever distance you want to use.)

7) Another optional item I did to make the monitor box easier to read was to open the colors tab.

Change Monitor Text to white and change Monitor Background to dark blue.

8) You will need to go back and enter information into: Status Text and Station Info, however that is

not necessary to do so now.

9) Now on the top menu open the Action tab.

Click on Connect to APRS Server. If everything is set correctly a box should open asking you to

logon. Click yes, when you do 6 small green blocks should appear in the top center of your map

and your computer should start announcing stations. Your map should start populating as well. If

you have problems with this setup get in touch with me, KA2BED or Bill Mack KA2LED. Try us

on the 147.360 repeater first.

Good Luck!

I hope to see new call signs on my screen soon. My APRS is on at my station 24/7 as it is as a

digipeater and an IGate. The RF frequency for APRS is 144.390 simplex. You need a TNC and a

radio to connect to the RF side. Kenwood and some others make APRS 2 meter radios. The

Kenwood TS710 is a good example.

UI-NWS

UI-NWS is another usefull section of Ui-View. It allows the National Weather Service to flag real

time watches and warnings directly onto your APRS map. This is done by downloading a set of

shape files from the NWS and unzipping them into the Ui-View program files. This can be a little

more complicated than the Ui-View setup because you have to go into the actual program files.

There are three sets of files for county outlines, standard NWS warning areas, and costal marine

zones are required. These files can be downloaded from the NOAA/NWS website.

The specific files needed are located at:

Counties (filename always begins with "c_"):

   http://www.weather.gov/geodata/catalog/county/html/county.htm

NWS Warning Zones (filename always begins with "z_"):

http://www.weather.gov/geodata/catalog/wsom/html/pubzone.htm

Marine Zones:(filename always begins with "mz_")

    http://www.weather.gov/geodata/catalog/wsom/html/marinezones.htm

(You want the file  "Coastal Marine Zones Including the Great Lakes" on this page.)

These files need to be downloaded and unzipped into:

Open you hard drive and click on Program Files.

Open Peak Systems

Open UI-View32

Open NWS

You will see a note: Put the NWS shapefiles here.

Once that is done close your hard drive.

Open Ui-View32

On the top menu bring down File

Open UI-NWS

This will open a message box over your map if shape files have been loaded correctly. Minimumize this box and UI-NWS will run in the brackground of Ui-View. You will have a small box open in the upper left corner of your screen like you do with the map server. You can close that box once the UI-NWS box has been minimumized. You will have to restart UI-NWS each time you start Ui-View. If you seem to be having problems downloading the shape files, send me an email and I will attach the files to a reply. Next I will go into how to setup Ui-View32 to merge into the RF side.
